Scotland Tour: Isle of Mull

From Mallaig, the Heidinger tour of Scotland continued on yet another lovely - though slow and tortuous (not for the easily car-sick!) - drive on single-track roads, snaking in and out along the protruding sounds, until we made our way to the Kilchoan ferry...just in time. The ferry would then take us south across the Sound of Mull to the town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, where we would be based for the next two days and nights:
The ruins of a castle (this one seen from the ferry upon our departure) had become nearly as commonplace as the seagulls. In fact, one of our favorite games on the road trip was to guess how many castles there were within 10 miles of our present location. We would then ask 'Stella' (our GPS unit - Stella knows pretty much everything) to confirm the answer, which was usually between 3 and 6 within any given 10-mile radius:
The sound of Mull is a popular place for sailing. We were graced with another day of fabulous weather:
Britt and I on the ferry:
It was a brief, 35-minute trip across the sound to the harbor at Tobermory:
Tobermory was a colorful string of seafood restaurants, art shops, and trolling tourists:

On the outskirts of Tobermory, just behind our bed and breakfast, stood the Baliscate standing stones:

On my run south along the coast from Tobermory, I discovered great running trails at Aros park. The highlight of the run was coming across a series of waterfalls and cascades descending to the sound. On the precipice of the highest (50-foot) waterfall:
Though Tobermory was always abuzz and the restaurants were always full, the rest of the expansive island wilderness was seemingly mute and desert:
Except for the occasional sight of mooring boats...
...our evening drive through the quiet of the island (again on winding, single-track roads) was interrupted only by sheep and highland cattle:

Traffic congestion on Mull:

We continued to be strangely drawn to sites of pagan significance. An out of body experience at the Dervaig standing stones:
